Walking and photographing are often solo pursuits, combining the act of walking with the act of looking and exploring place helps one to understand and navigate the world, photographs can aid memory and help to create a sense of purpose and direction. Photography combined with walking can lead to discovery and noticing details of the rhythmic cyclical changes in habitat, weather and season. Walking at night could be seen as dangerous but walking together offers discussion and debate, the sharing of experiences and stories and allows individuals to understand more about why walking and photographing can be vital for our wellbeing and survival in the large urban environment.
“Our walks are about seeing: noticing the unnoticeable. Walking as a group offers support and friendship and the chance to photograph in unusual areas in the dark, finding unexpected gems lit by unchoregraphed lighting experts throughout the streets and parks. Sharing ideas and experiences, allowing others to also enjoy photographing in the inner city environment, has become a monthly ritual with a happy band of walkers, showing up and happily being led on a magical mystery tour!” HM
